Knee Pain Injection Procedure 

Preparation 

The physician swabs the knee, injects a numbing medication and positions a special X-ray device called a fluoroscope.

The physician injects the medication into the knee joint

Injecting the Medication 

The rear of the syringe is removed from the needle and a syringe filled with a local anesthetic and steroid is attached. The physician injects the medication into the joint. The local anesthetic serves to provide you with a immediate pain relief while the steroid serves to reduce inflammation of the joint, leading to more long term relief.

End of Procedure 

The local anesthetic and steroid solution in the knee joint will reduce inflammation and pain. The injection can be repeated if necessary.

Supartz is injected directly into the knee joint to restore the cushioning and lubricating properties of synovial fluid (i.e., joint fluid). The sodium hyaluronate used in Supartz is extracted from chicken combs. Sodium hyaluronate is a polysaccharide which contains repeating disaccharide units of glucuronic acid and N-acetylglucosamine.

Preparation 

Your doctor may use a local anesthetic to numb your knee.

Fluid Removal 

Your doctor removes the fluid that is currently in your knee joint with a process called arthrocentesis.
