Trigger Point Injections
What is Myofascial Pain?
Myofascial pain is condition that is secondary to a strain or injury to a muscle. A trigger point can be a result from the strained or injured tissue. A trigger point injection is a procedure done to relieve the hyperactive muscle, allowing the muscle to relax relieving the pain.
A needle is inserted into the palpated trigger point, and the anesthetic is injected into the muscle. Patients may feel a burning sensation when the anesthetic is injected, and then the area will get numb. Several trigger points may be injected at a time.
Risk?
The risk of complication from a trigger point injection is very low. Complications such as bleeding and infection at the injection site are uncommon. However, you may have temporary soreness or numbness at the injection site.
